Yard
Ever drank from a half-yard or yard of ale? It has the ball at the bottom. The problem is, when you get close to the bottom, an air bubble gets into the bulb. If you're not paying attention a long, slow sip turns into a deluge of ale.Tell-tales signs of the presence of this flood-causing air are the noticeable "glug" sound as you drink. First timers tend to ignore it, but this is a mistake you will only make once. The trick here is to go slow, very slow while you drink. And know when to stop. Watch the liquid. You have to be quick. If you see it surging towards you, quickly bring the yard away from the mouth and drop it down, returning the ale to its resting place. Repeat this process until the ale is out of the neck and has been consumed well into the bulb. Only then will you have defeated the surge.
A similar situation is found in the boot, as seen in the movie "Beerfest." The boot actually is easier -when the critical moment comes, one simply turns the boot quickly. Hence, the yard requires more skill. Being a rounded vessel, turning will likely only exacerbate the problem.
